“ Real fossil excavation site of Phuwiangosaurus | Dinosaur light and sound animation museum | Observe real fossil laboratory research work ”

Phu Kum Khao Dinosaur Park Research Center began with a major discovery in 1994, when Phra Kru Wichit Sahatsakhun, the abbot of Wat Sakawan, found exposed bone fragments emerging from the soil at Phu Kum Khao in Sahatsakhan District, Kalasin Province, Thailand. After that, the Department of Mineral Resources and research teams conducted systematic excavations and confirmed that the site is one of the most important dinosaur fossil sites in Thailand. The Phu Kum Khao area dates back to the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 100–130 million years ago. In the past, it was a low-lying floodplain with sediment accumulation, which allowed organic remains to be rapidly buried and preserved as fossils in remarkably good condition. This geological setting explains why the site contains an exceptionally high density of fossil remains.

Continuous excavations have revealed more than 700 dinosaur bone fragments from several herbivorous dinosaurs. The finds include bones from limbs, ribs, vertebrae, teeth, and jaws, with some skeleton parts preserved in near-complete alignment. This makes Phu Kum Khao one of the most densely fossil-rich dinosaur sites in Thailand. Most fossils belong to sauropod dinosaurs, especially Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae, a long-necked herbivore that plays an important role in understanding dinosaur evolution in Southeast Asia. In addition, there are also indications of other prehistoric species that are still under ongoing scientific study.

The site was later developed into a large-scale research center and museum, officially named the Sirindhorn Museum. It is designed as a comprehensive geological and paleontological learning center. Inside, there are eight exhibition zones covering topics from the origin of the universe, the formation of Earth, the emergence of life, the age of dinosaurs, mass extinction events, and the evolution of humans. The museum uses modern presentation techniques, including light and sound effects, life-sized dinosaur models, and animatronic displays to create an immersive learning experience. It also features a laboratory area where visitors can observe real scientists working on fossil cleaning, preservation, and research through glass viewing panels.

Another major highlight is the actual excavation site located on the hillside of Phu Kum Khao. Visitors can see the original rock layers and fossil positions in situ, providing valuable scientific insight into how fossils are formed in their natural geological context.Today, the Sirindhorn Museum is recognized as Thailand’s most important dinosaur research center and serves as a key reference site in regional and international geology. It is also a major scientific tourism destination that helps visitors of all ages understand Earth’s history, ancient ecosystems, and the evolution of life.

How to Get There
  • By car: From Kalasin city, take Highway 227 (Kalasin–Sahatsakhan Road) for about 28 km. Clear signboards will guide you to the Sirindhorn Museum / Phu Kum Khao Dinosaur Park.
  • By public transport: From Kalasin Bus Terminal, take a Kalasin–Sahatsakhan bus. Get off at Sahatsakhan District, then take a local taxi or motorcycle taxi to the museum.

Travel Tips
  • Allow at least 2–3 hours for the visit, as the exhibition area is large and has multiple learning zones.
  • Don’t miss the hilltop excavation site, the original fossil discovery area.
  • Inside the museum, there are exhibition zones covering the origin of the universe, dinosaurs, and evolutin of life.
  • A research laboratory is open for viewing real scientific work on fossil preservation.
  • Around the park, there are dinosaur-themed souvenir shops selling plush toys, shirts, and gifts.
