Pha Mok Mi Wai is located in the Tham Pha Nam Thip Non-Hunting Area, which is part of the southern mountain ecosystem of the Phu Phan Range. The area serves as an ecological transition zone between dry dipterocarp forest, mixed deciduous forest, and dry evergreen forest, resulting in high biodiversity compared to most areas in Roi Et Province. The landscape consists of ridges and sandstone cliffs interlayered with shale, formed through tectonic uplift and long-term natural erosion over millions of years. This process has created wide cliff edges and open rock terraces that serve as panoramic viewpoints.Although the elevation is moderate, the alternating valleys and slopes allow cool air to circulate at night. Moisture becomes trapped and condenses into fog, forming regular morning sea-of-mist conditions. The sea of mist is most visible from the rainy season through the cool season, especially from October to February, which is considered the best travel period. The mist flows across the valleys in layers, resembling waves over the forest.
The ecosystem is highly intact, consisting mainly of dry dipterocarp and mixed deciduous forests. Native plant species include teak-like dry forest trees such as Dipterocarpus species, along with seasonal medicinal plants and wild mushrooms.Wildlife in the area includes various bird species, squirrels, reptiles, and forest insects. Birds that inhabit cliff and forest edges reflect the ecological richness and stability of the habitat. In terms of tourism, Pha Mok Mi Wai is developed as an eco-tourism destination. Visitors can enjoy sea-of-mist viewing, nature trails, sunrise observation, and designated camping areas. In the morning, layers of mist rise from the valleys, while in the evening the sunset casts warm light over the forest and mountains, creating continuously changing scenic views throughout the day.
However, visitors must strictly follow conservation rules, such as not littering, not disturbing wildlife, not lighting fires outside designated areas, and keeping noise levels low to preserve the natural environment. Therefore, tourism at Pha Mok Mi Wai is centered on conservation-based experiences that rely on responsible visitor behavior to maintain the area’s ecological integrity and natural beauty in the long term.
