Nan National Museum is located within the former residence of the rulers of Nan, known as the “Ho Kham.” It was built by Chao Suriya Phong Phritdet, the ruler of Nan, as his residence in 1903 (B.E. 2446). The building is spacious and beautifully constructed with brick and mortar, with delicate lace-like decorations. It is considered one of Thailand’s outstanding architectural works. In front of the museum stands a monument of Chao Suriya Phong Phritdet. The Fine Arts Department received the Ho Kham building in 1974 (B.E. 2517) to establish the Nan National Museum.
The ground floor exhibits ethnographic displays about Lanna culture, including traditional Nan textiles and weaving techniques, demonstrations of local customs and beliefs, and artifacts showing the daily life and tools of the five local ethnic groups: Tai Lue, Hmong, Yao, Thin, and Phi Tong Luang.
The upper floor is dedicated to the history of Nan.
