“Experience a powerful emotional connection at the curved memorial wall shaped like a giant wave, engraved with the names of victims. See two large fishing boats that were swept far inland by the tsunami and preserved as reminders of the disaster.”

Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Park is located on land that was heavily affected by the devastating tsunami. It stands as a place where grief, faith, and hope are meaningfully combined. The most striking feature of the park is a large curved concrete wall designed to resemble a rolling ocean wave. Along the wall are niches for placing photographs and engraved names of victims—both Thai and international—allowing families and visitors to pay tribute and remember their loved ones.

Another powerful symbol within the park is the presence of two large fishing boats, known as the “orange boat” and the “blue boat.” These vessels were carried inland by the force of the tsunami for over a kilometer and left stranded on land. They have been preserved in their original positions as a reminder of the immense power of nature. Nearby, the Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Museum presents exhibitions and photographs that recount the timeline of the disaster, from its occurrence to the community’s recovery, serving as an educational resource about natural disasters.

Today, the memorial park has been developed into a peaceful green space by the sea. Walking paths lead visitors along a quiet and clean shoreline, creating a calm and reflective atmosphere. At the front of the park stands a Buddha statue in the Mara Vichai posture facing the sea, symbolizing spiritual strength and offering comfort to both locals and visitors. Visiting this place is not only about sightseeing, but also about understanding the importance of living respectfully alongside nature and supporting the resilience of the Ban Nam Khem community.
