“A tall white pagoda on an octagonal base, with a Srivijaya-Rattanakosin architectural style. A 360-degree viewpoint offering views of Surat Thani, the Tapi River, and the Gulf of Thailand, along with the history of King Rama IX's visit.”
Phra That Sri Surat, also known as Phra That Khao Tha Phet, is one of the most important religious sites in Surat Thani Province. It is located on top of Khao Tha Phet, which is considered one of the highest and most prominent viewpoints in the city.
The pagoda was built on February 27, 1957, in the Srivijaya art style combined with the early Rattanakosin style. The structure is a tall, slender pagoda, located on an octagonal base, a symbol of stability and balance. The pagoda is pure white, a symbol of faith and mental peace. Inside are enshrined Buddha's relics and disciples' relics, the highest sacred objects respected by Buddhists.
Historically, this pagoda has received royal patronage. On March 27, 1959, His Majesty King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit paid their respects and also initiated the conservation of the surrounding forest area. Later, in 1984, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn visited on behalf of the King to enshrine additional Buddha's relics and planted commemorative trees, which are still visible in the area today.
The area around the pagoda is part of Khao Tha Phet Park, which was declared a national forest reserve in 1965 and is currently under the care of the Khao Tha Phet Forest Conservation Development and Promotion Station. It features dry evergreen forest and mixed deciduous forest with biodiversity, including local plants and wildlife such as macaques and various birds, serving as the "lungs of Surat Thani".
In terms of tourism, Khao Tha Phet is a prominent 360-degree panoramic viewpoint. Tourists can see the Tapi River winding through the city, rows of houses and buildings, and the views of the Gulf of Thailand on a clear day. It is also a beautiful spot for sunrise and sunset, and in some parts of the year, you may encounter thin sea of fog covering the city in the morning.
With a perfect blend of religious faith + royal history + abundant nature + a landmark viewpoint, Phra That Sri Surat is one of the must-visit places in Surat Thani.
