“The highlights are the large Reclining Buddha, the circular chedi, and the unique blend of Lanna and Sukhothai architecture.”
Wat Phaya Wat is one of Nan’s oldest temples, established around 1492 during the reign of Phaya Kan Mueang, ruler of the Nan Kingdom. The temple has long been a center of faith and spirituality for the local community.
The temple houses a magnificent large Reclining Buddha made of brick and stucco, gilded with gold, considered one of the oldest reclining Buddha images in Nan. In addition, there is a circular chedi built in Lanna-Sukhothai style, made from laterite and ancient bricks, reflecting the rich fusion of artistic influences from different periods.
During the cool season, Wat Phaya Wat offers a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for meditation and relaxation. During major Buddhist festivals, such as Visakha Bucha Day, the temple becomes lively with rituals and traditional cultural activities.
For those who appreciate photography, architecture, and Lanna culture, Wat Phaya Wat is a destination not to be missed.
