“The bas-relief carvings depict stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata of India”

Banteay Srei is a small temple built from pink sandstone on a flat base. Due to the durability and strength of pink sandstone, the carvings have remained well-preserved despite being over a thousand years old. The temple features bas-relief carvings depicting stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata of Indi

The temple was constructed in the 10th century (around 967 CE) under the patronage of Yajnavaraha, a high-ranking official and scholar during the reign of King Rajendravarman II. Banteay Srei is often referred to as the "Citadel of Women" because it contains some of the most delicate and intricate carvings in Khmer art. Most of the carvings illustrate scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as Hindu deities such as Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma.

The temple complex consists of a central sanctuary and smaller subsidiary temples arranged on a rectangular base. The walls, doorways, and pillars are adorned with finely detailed bas-relief carvings, allowing visitors to admire the exquisite artistry and learn about religious and cultural stories.

Additionally, the temple is surrounded by a moat and enclosing walls, a characteristic feature of early Khmer temples. Today, Banteay Srei remains one of Cambodia’s major tourist attractions and stands as a prime example of ancient Khmer art that has been well-preserved.
