“The Royal Palace of Cambodia is a palace located in Phnom Penh. It is a complex structure and serves as the royal residence of the King of Cambodia. Thai people often refer to this palace as “Khemarin Palace”.”

Royal Palace (Preah Barum Reachea Veang Chaktomuk Serei Mongkol) is one of Cambodia’s most significant royal complexes, located in the heart of Phnom Penh. It serves as the official residence of the King of Cambodia and has been in royal use since its construction in 1866, with certain interruptions during periods of national turmoil such as the Khmer Rouge regime.

Thai visitors often refer to the entire complex as “Khemarin Palace,” although “Khemarin” is actually the name of only one specific building within the broader Royal Palace grounds.

The palace was built after King Norodom relocated the capital from Oudong to Phnom Penh in the mid-19th century, marking an important transition in the political and cultural landscape of Cambodia at that time.

With its radiant golden architecture blending classic Khmer design and subtle French colonial influence, the Royal Palace stands today not only as a reflection of Cambodia’s royal heritage but also as a symbol of prosperity, culture, and centuries-old history that continues to shine in the modern era.
