“A nature conservation tourist attraction in Wang Nam Khiao District, it is famous for its large herds of wild bulls that come down to graze in the grasslands in the evening and for its beautiful viewpoints of the sea of mist during winter mornings.”
Khao Phaeng Ma, or Khao Phaeng Ma Wildlife Sanctuary in Wang Nam Khiao District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, is a highly ecologically significant nature conservation area. Located in the western forest boundary of Thailand, connecting Khao Yai and Thap Lan National Parks, it boasts a high biodiversity and serves as a vital refuge for numerous large wildlife species.
In the past, the Khao Phaeng Ma area suffered from extensive forest encroachment and natural resource destruction, resulting in a "bald mountain," damaging the ecosystem and significantly reducing wildlife populations. However, through the strong collaborative efforts of the Wildlife and Plant Conservation Foundation of Thailand under the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen, government agencies, and local villagers, a continuous and sustainable reforestation project has been implemented for many years. This restoration, including management of water and food sources, has restored the forest's richness, a remarkable conservation achievement.
Today, Khao Phaeng Ma is renowned as home to one of the largest and most complete herds of "wild gaur" in Thailand. These gaur are endangered and protected species, and tourists can observe them grazing in the grasslands at the Khao Sung checkpoint. (But you must stay within the safe distances set by the officials.) This is a rare and truly impressive experience. In addition to the gaur, the area is also home to other wildlife, such as barking deer, deer, various birds, and reptiles, which are part of the food chain in the dry dipterocarp and mixed deciduous forest ecosystems.
Khao Phaeng Ma Wildlife Sanctuary offers not only gaur viewing but also a stunning viewpoint. Especially during winter, the area transforms into a breathtaking sea of mist in the morning. Camping tourists can enjoy fresh air and a cool climate year-round. Tourism here emphasizes ecotourism, promoting learning while respecting and sustainably conserving wildlife and nature.
