Atumashi Monastery is one of the most distinctive and revered monasteries in Mandalay, Myanmar. It was constructed under the order of King Mindon in 1857 to enshrine four complete sets of the Tripitaka (Buddhist scriptures), which were kept in elaborately decorated golden chests. To safeguard the scriptures, the king appointed a highly knowledgeable royal monk, Pakhan Sayadaw, renowned for his unmatched expertise in the Tripitaka.

Architecturally, the monastery features a multi-tiered wooden structure enhanced with white and gold stucco decorations, standing five levels tall. Unlike the intricate teakwood style of many Burmese monasteries, Atumashi Monastery integrates elements of European design, which makes it visually distinctive and architecturally fascinating. Although the original structure was destroyed by fire in 1890, it was reconstructed in the 1990s following historical documentation.

The name "Atumashi" means “incomparable” or “most magnificent,” a title that truly reflects the monastery’s regal elegance and its spiritual and cultural importance.

How to Get There

From central Mandalay, travelers can take a taxi, tuk-tuk, or rent a bicycle to reach the monastery. It is located near Kuthodaw Pagoda and Mandalay Hill, making it a convenient stop on a cultural sightseeing route. Local tour packages often include this site.
