“Prasat Ban Bu is a relatively well-preserved "Dharmasala" (House with Fire) located within the grounds of Ban Bu Wittyasan School. It served as a critical rest stop along the historic Rajamarga Royal Road in ancient times.”

Prasat Ban Bu is a small yet historically significant archaeological site. Its architectural style is classified as a Dharmasala or House with Fire, constructed during the reign of King Jayavarman VII of the Khmer Empire (around the 18th Century B.E.). According to the Preah Khan inscription, the King ordered the construction of 121 fire houses along various routes from Angkor. Prasat Ban Bu is one of the 17 Dharmasalas situated on the vital route connecting the capital of Angkor to the city of Vimayapura (now Phimai Historical Park), known as the Royal Road or Rajamarga.

The architecture of Prasat Ban Bu is unique and differs from typical Khmer temples. The building is rectangular and long, constructed primarily with laterite and sandstone. The layout features only one entrance facing East. The southern wall is lined with a row of windows, while the northern wall is entirely solid—a characteristic feature of Bayon-style Dharmasalas. The most striking element is the vaulted roof, shaped like a boat's hull or a turtle's back, which remains more visible here than at other Dharmasalas in the Buriram area.

Inside Prasat Ban Bu, while lacking the intricate carvings found at Phanom Rung, the simple and sturdy structure reflects its functional purpose as a "rest house" for travelers or pilgrims in the past. It may have also served as a site for small religious rituals during long journeys. A unique aspect of this site is its location within the grounds of Ban Bu Wittyasan School, making it a living history classroom for students and tourists seeking to experience Khmer civilization from a different perspective than that of the grander temples.

Visiting Prasat Ban Bu is like retracing the steps of the ancient Royal Road to understand the transportation system and the care provided by ancient Khmer kings to their subjects. Although it is a single-building site, the stories hidden behind each block of laterite reflect the greatness of an empire that once unified this region. It is a peaceful stop that provides deep historical insight before one continues their journey to the nearby Phanom Rung Historical Park.

How to Get There
  • Private Car: From Buriram city, head towards Phrakhon Chai District (Highway 219). At the Phrakhon Chai intersection, turn right toward Phanom Rung (Highway 2117). Drive for 15-20 km; the temple is inside Ban Bu Wittyasan School on the left.

  • Public Transport: Take a bus from Buriram to Phrakhon Chai, then a songthaew or motorcycle taxi to Ban Bu. Alternatively, take a bus heading to Phanom Rung and get off at the front of Ban Bu Wittyasan School.

Travel Tips
  • Visiting: As it is located within a school, visitors should seek permission from school staff and remain quiet, especially during school hours.

  • Photography: The best angle is from the South to capture the row of windows against the boat-shaped roof.

  • Etiquette: Do not climb on the temple structure or the laterite roof to prevent damage to the heritage site.
