“A unique archaeological management model known as a "Museum in an Educational Institution." It features Sawai Kilns 1 and 2, which are large-scale ancient cross-draft kilns housed under a modern exhibition dome. Visitors can witness layers of discarded ceramics that form a tangible page of ancient economic history.”

Sawai Ancient Kiln Site was one of the grandest ceramic industrial complexes in Southeast Asia during ancient times (9th–14th Century B.E.). The scale of this site is truly remarkable, with evidence of over 200 kilns lining the Ban Sawai area and nearby Ban Gruat. The most intact kilns, serving as the primary model for study, are the Sawai Kilns located right here inside Ban Gruat Witthayakharn School. These kilns did not just produce items for local use; they were the Mother Factories that exported glazed wares to Angkor in Cambodia and various major cities throughout the Khmer Empire.

In terms of production techniques, the Sawai Ancient Kiln Site demonstrates advanced wisdom in constructing Mound Kilns or Overturned Boat Kilns. These were built with clay on natural slopes to allow heat to flow horizontally (Cross-draft) over the wares. This method achieved temperatures high enough to create the iconic Brown Glaze and the vitrified Ash Glaze (greenish tint), known for their glossy finish and durability hallmarks of ancient Khmer stoneware. The products ranged from small items like animal-shaped cosmetic pots to large jars and architectural roof tiles used to decorate stone sanctuaries.

Inside the exhibition dome of Sawai Kiln 1, you can witness the kiln structure excavated deep into the soil. The kiln walls, having been fired for centuries, have turned into a vibrant orange-red and are as rock-hard as stone. Surrounding the kiln are layers upon layers of Wasters (discarded or broken ceramic pieces) that have accumulated over time, vividly illustrating the massive scale of ancient industrial production a truly spectacular sight to behold.

A visit to the Sawai Ancient Kiln Site opens a new perspective: ancient Buriram was not only home to kings who built temples for gods but also to a vast community of artisans and merchants who drove the economy through ceramic art. The atmosphere within the school, where "Junior Guides" (students) provide insights, gives this site a living soul that surpasses typical museums. It is a must-visit destination for history lovers and fans of ancient crafts.
