“Majestic four-faced pavilion housing the sacred Chaiyaphruk wood pillar and guardian spirits. It serves as Pathum Thani's spiritual center, offering blessings of prosperity and peace.”

The City Pillar Shrine of Pathum Thani, located in front of the provincial hall on Prachathipat Road in Bang Prok Subdistrict, Mueang Pathum Thani District, is one of the most important centers of faith for the people of Pathum Thani Province. It was built as a symbol of stability, prosperity, and auspiciousness for the province, according to traditional Thai beliefs that the "city pillar" is the spiritual center and the abode of the deity protecting the city. Construction began on January 3, 1977, through the cooperation of government agencies, merchants, citizens, and devout individuals in the province. His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch (Vasana Vasano) presided over the foundation stone laying ceremony, and the city pillar was officially erected on August 23, 1978, a significant historical event for Pathum Thani Province.

The shrine's building was designed by the Fine Arts Department as a four-sided pavilion with a spire in a Thai-style applied architecture, beautifully blending traditional Thai art with contemporary styles. The exterior structure is striking with its tall spire in the center, surrounded by layered roofs and Thai-style decorative patterns. Inside, is enshrined a circular city pillar made of teak wood, sourced by the Royal Forest Department from the Lad Yao forest plantation in Nakhon Sawan province. The base of the pillar is carved with lotus motifs, while the top is adorned with a crystal lotus bud, a traditional Thai symbol representing purity, prosperity, and the stability of the city. The intricate artwork reflects the craftsmanship of Thai artisans and the cosmological concepts from Buddhism and Hinduism that influenced the construction of city pillar shrines throughout Thailand.

The shrine also houses "Phra Kal Chai Sri," the traditional city protector deity, along with Phra Suea Mueang and Phra Song Mueang, important guardian spirits believed to safeguard the city and protect it from danger. These statues are beautifully detailed in traditional Thai art. Phra Kal Chai Sri is depicted seated atop an owl, a symbol of power and vigilance, while Phra Suea Mueang and Phra Song Mueang are portrayed as ceremonial deities holding their respective weapons, reflecting the ancient Thai concept of city protection. Furthermore, the pavilion contains a Phra Yod Thong (a type of amulet) from Wat Kai Tia, as well as numerous other sacred objects and talismans from various temples in Pathum Thani province. This place is more than just a city shrine; it's a center of faith and cultural heritage for the community in the province.

For decades, the Pathum Thani City Pillar Shrine has been a place of continuous worship for people, especially during important festivals such as New Year, Songkran, or before starting significant life events like exams, new jobs, or businesses. Locals believe that paying respects at the city pillar brings good fortune, prosperity, and stability to their lives and families. The atmosphere inside the shrine is peaceful, serene, and well-maintained, making it an ideal place to relax, meditate, or learn about the local history of Pathum Thani province. Furthermore, its proximity to government offices and important tourist routes makes it easily accessible to visitors year-round.

This city pillar shrine reflects the identity of Pathum Thani province as an ancient city on the Chao Phraya River with a long history and diverse cultures—Thai, Mon, and Chinese. The faith people have in the city pillar is not just a religious belief; it symbolizes the connection between the people and their city and serves as a spiritual center reflecting the community's cooperation in preserving local heritage to this day. Tourists visiting Pathum Thani province often stop by the city's main shrine to experience the historical, artistic, and cultural value of Thailand, which is still clearly evident in this area.
