“A lively Thai–Cambodian border market featuring household goods, second-hand clothing, local souvenirs, and a variety of Isan products near the Chong Chom border crossing.”
Chong Chom Market is located at the Chong Chom Permanent Border Checkpoint in Dan Subdistrict, Kap Choeng District, Surin Province, and is considered an important border market in terms of economy, trade, and tourism in Lower Northeastern Thailand. The area originally developed from a small informal trading point where Thai and Cambodian villagers exchanged local agricultural products, forest goods, and daily necessities as part of traditional cross-border livelihoods. Later, with the establishment of an official permanent border checkpoint, transportation and trade became more convenient, leading to rapid expansion of the market into a large commercial hub with hundreds of shops spread across the border area.
Today, the market offers a wide variety of products, ranging from high-quality second-hand clothing imported from countries such as South Korea, Japan, and China, to small household appliances, home goods, agricultural tools, local handicrafts, traditional woven textiles from Lower Isan, and everyday consumer products. It also features local and regional foods from both Thailand and Cambodia, as well as seasonal forest products that attract visitors throughout the year. The market atmosphere is lively and dynamic, driven by active trade between Thai and Cambodian vendors, with communication commonly conducted in both Thai and Khmer languages, reflecting a unique cultural blend along the border.
In addition, Chong Chom Market serves as a strategic border trade gateway connecting economic routes to Cambodia, where travelers can continue their journey to destinations such as Poipet or Siem Reap. As a result, the market is not only a place for shopping but also an important center for cultural exchange and a key international tourism gateway of Surin Province
