“The monastery features a unique shrine built on the back of a large crocodile sculpture, which is the central symbol of the temple and an important cultural landmark.”

Domijeakong, commonly called Crocodile Monastery, is a historic Buddhist temple in Myawaddy, Kayin State, Myanmar, rich with local cultural significance. The temple is famous for its shrine constructed on the back of a giant crocodile statue, which symbolizes the core of the temple’s identity and spiritual power.

According to local legend, long ago a crocodile climbed up a high hill to pay respects and worship at the Golden Pagoda (locally known as Su Mi Win Won Se Di Do), the city’s main temple. The crocodile refused to return to the water despite villagers' efforts to chase it away, eventually dying on the hilltop. This event deeply impressed the locals, who saw it as a sign of the crocodile’s strong faith in Buddhism, elevating it to a sacred guardian spirit.

In honor of this sacred creature, the villagers built Domijeakong Temple right on the hill where the crocodile passed away. The temple’s name translates literally to “Crocodile Hill Temple.” Most people simply call it Crocodile Monastery. Another local belief holds that the spirit of this crocodile watches over the temple, protecting it from evil forces and preventing theft of the temple’s valuable treasures.
