“This yellow colonial-style landmark, a recipient of a prestigious conservation award, stands out with its arched windows and blend of Western architectural styles. Inside, it houses a collection of rare books and local historical documents. The serene and valuable atmosphere makes it an ideal place for learning and photography.”
The Queen Sirikit National Library stands as a magnificent historical landmark, originally constructed in 1915 during the reign of King Rama VI. It served as the first provincial hall of Nakhon Phanom, acting as the administrative heart of the province for decades. In 1994, the building underwent an extensive restoration and was repurposed as a national library to honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, on the auspicious occasion of her 60th birthday.
The building is a masterclass in Colonial-style architecture, reflecting the French influence prevalent in the Mekong sub-region during the early 20th century. This two-story masonry structure is renowned for its vibrant mustard-yellow facade, complemented by elegant white trim and arched windows adorned with intricate stucco moldings. The preservation of its original structure and aesthetic integrity earned the building the Outstanding Architectural Conservation Award from the Association of Siamese Architects in 1997, solidifying its status as a protected heritage site.
Beyond its architectural beauty, the library serves as a premier center for lifelong learning and cultural heritage. The interior houses diverse collections, including general literature, a children’s section, and most notably, the Local Information Center. This specialized department archives rare manuscripts and historical documents detailing the ethnic diversity and rich history of the Mekong riverside. With its tranquil atmosphere and preserved wooden interiors, the library offers visitors a unique journey through time, bridging the gap between Nakhon Phanom’s storied past and its vibrant intellectual future.

Travel Tips
-
The best time to visit is in the morning, between 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM. This is when the sunlight illuminates the mustard yellow building most beautifully, and it's not too hot, making it ideal for exterior photography.
-
For interior visits, please dress respectfully, as this is a government building and an educational facility used by many for reading.
-
Bring a cloth bag to put your shoes in before entering the library building, as shoes are not allowed on the old wooden floors inside to help preserve the surface.
-
Photography is permitted, but please refrain from using flash and making loud noises in the reading areas to maintain peace and quiet for other users.
-
We recommend walking to the nearby Old Governor's Residence Museum for a more complete and enriching experience of the old city.

Look for a popular spot for photos around the side pillars, where you can see the long row of arched windows and beautifully arranged stucco decorations. This is a favorite spot for architecture enthusiasts.
