“Mae Yang Waterfall is characterized by the lush surrounding forest and a wide rocky terrace where water flows across. Visitors can relax, have a picnic, and safely play in the water, as it is not very deep.”

Mae Yang Waterfall is a small to medium-sized natural waterfall located in the upstream area of a watershed near Huai Sang Khiap Reservoir, in Somdet District, Kalasin Province, Thailand. The surrounding landscape consists of low hills and mixed deciduous forest and dry dipterocarp forest, which means the waterfall is not a steep cliff but rather a series of cascading rock terraces. The waterfall is formed by a natural stream flowing over layers of sandstone and hardened sedimentary rock that have been gradually eroded over time, creating stepped rock formations with shallow pools of varying depth. During the rainy season, the water spreads widely over the rock surface, forming a thin, beautiful sheet of flowing water. The surrounding area remains relatively pristine forest, consisting of medium to large trees such as teak, dipterocarp, and padauk, along with understory plants and ferns in humid areas. The ecosystem is quite diverse, with small wildlife such as forest birds, squirrels, and aquatic insects. This area also plays an important role as an upstream watershed that supports the Huai Sang Khiap Reservoir.

Water levels vary by season. During the rainy season (May to October), the water flows strongly and covers most of the rock terraces, although currents can be strong and caution is needed when entering the water. The best visiting period is from September to December, when water levels are still good and the surrounding forest is lush and green. In the dry season, the water level drops significantly, exposing the rocks and making the area more suitable for relaxing rather than swimming.Mae Yang Waterfall remains relatively natural and undeveloped as a major commercial tourist attraction. There are no large permanent facilities, only basic parking areas and access paths. Visitors are expected to bring their own supplies such as food, drinking water, and picnic equipment.

Most visitors are locals from nearby districts and families who come for picnics, as well as nature lovers who enjoy photography and exploring the stream. Popular activities include swimming in shallow pools, relaxing on rock terraces, and taking photos of the natural scenery. However, visitors should be cautious, as the rocks can be slippery, especially during the rainy season when the water flow is strong. Water levels can also change rapidly during heavy rain, and there are no full-time staff on site, so swimming during unsafe weather conditions should be avoided.Overall, Mae Yang Waterfall is not known for its height_ or dramatic scale, but for its peaceful atmosphere, natural beauty, and simplicity, making it ideal for those seeking a quiet retreat in nature away from the city.

How to Get There
  • By car: From Kalasin city, take Highway 213 (Kalasin–Sakon Nakhon Road) heading toward Somdet District. Once you reach Somdet town, turn onto the route leading to Huai Sang Khiap Reservoir (Saeng Badan Subdistrict). There are signposts along the way. The road is a mix of paved asphalt and concrete, and it is accessible by all types of vehicles.

Travel Tips
  • The best time to visit is between September and December, when water levels are ideal and the surrounding nature is at its greenest and most beautiful.
  • Avoid visiting during heavy rain or flood conditions, as the water current can become strong and the rocks may be very slippery, increasing the risk of accidents.
  • Bring your own drinking water, snacks, and a picnic mat, as there are only limited shops available near the waterfall.
  • Wear non-slip and comfortable shoes, as some paths are natural rocky or dirt surfaces that can be slippery.
  • Help preserve the environment by keeping the area clean, not littering in the waterfall area, and always taking your trash back out with you.
