“Mushroom-shaped rock formations and unique sandstone cliffs, 360° viewpoint overlooking forests and Mukdahan, nature trail for studying dry dipterocarp forest ecosystems.”

Phu Pha Wua Forest Park is located in a protected forest reserve area with a rich tropical forest ecosystem. The area is mainly composed of a mix of dry dipterocarp forest and mixed deciduous forest, and its geological structure consists of ancient sandstone formations that have existed for millions of years. These sandstone formations have been continuously shaped by wind, rain, and natural erosion over time, resulting in unique landscapes such as wide rock terraces, steep cliffs, and unusual pillar-like formations known as “mushroom rocks.”The terrain of Phu Pha Wua is highly complex, consisting of rolling and layered mountains with varying elevations. This creates multiple natural viewpoints, especially along ridges and cliffs where visitors can enjoy panoramic scenery stretching for dozens of kilometers.

On clear days, it is possible to see forests and mountain ranges extending toward Mukdahan Province, enhancing the sense of vast natural landscapes in lower northeastern Thailand. The mushroom rock field is one of the park’s most distinctive features, formed through differential weathering, where harder rock remains as pillars or rounded shapes while softer rock is gradually eroded away. The ecosystem consists of dry dipterocarp forest species such as Shorea obtusa, Shorea siamensis, Dipterocarpus obtusifolius, and Dipterocarpus tuberculatus, along with drought-tolerant grasses and understory plants adapted to relatively dry conditions.

Wildlife in the area is mostly small animals, including forest birds, insects, and creatures that inhabit rock crevices and open woodland areas, reflecting a healthy ecosystem despite not being a rainforest. During the rainy season, the area becomes lush and green with dense vegetation, while in the dry season the landscape shifts to golden tones of grassland and open forest, creating a clear seasonal contrast. The nature trail inside the forest park includes both soil paths and rocky terrain. Visitors should exercise caution in steep and uneven sections.

The hilltop viewpoint is one of the main highlights, especially in the early morning when light mist often blankets the valley, creating a calm and beautiful atmosphere. The sound of wind passing through the cliffs combined with the quietness of the forest makes Phu Pha Wua Forest Park an excellent destination for nature relaxation, hiking, and landscape photography. The best visiting period is from the rainy season to early winter (July–November) and during the cool season (November–February), when the weather is most pleasant for travel.

How to Get There
  • By car: From Kalasin city, take Highway 12 (Kalasin–Mukdahan) toward Kuchinarai District. Then turn into Kut Wa Subdistrict and follow signs to the forest park. The distance is approximately 85 kilometers. A powerful vehicle is recommended due to some steep uphill sections.
  • By public transport: Take a bus from Kalasin Bus Terminal to Kuchinarai District, then continue with a local taxi or hired vehicle to the forest park.
