“Get up close with rare red gaurs, walk along wooden nature trails, and watch water birds by Lam Pao Dam amid peaceful shaded forests — perfect for relaxation and nature photography.”

Suan Sa-on, officially known as the “Lam Pao Wildlife Conservation Development and Promotion Station,” is a large natural conservation area located beside the Lam Pao Reservoir in Kalasin Province, Thailand. Covering approximately 1,420 rai, the area features dry dipterocarp forest, wetlands, and natural grasslands, creating an ideal habitat for many wildlife species, especially the rare “red gaur,” a protected wild animal that is considered endangered in Thailand. One of the main highlights of Suan Sa-on is its semi-natural red gaur conservation and breeding program. The environment has been carefully designed to resemble a natural ecosystem, complete with grasslands, water sources, and forested areas that allow the animals to live as naturally as possible. Visitors can observe the red gaurs along wooden boardwalks and nature study trails, particularly during the early morning and late afternoon when the animals often come out to graze in open fields, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife photography and close-range observation.

In addition to red gaurs, the area is home to several other wildlife species, including deer, barking deer, monkeys, peacocks, pheasants, reptiles, and numerous local bird species. The nearby Lam Pao Reservoir is also an important birdwatching location in Kalasin Province. During the cool season, many migratory water birds arrive in the area, such as ducks, egrets, and shorebirds, making the site especially popular among birdwatchers and nature photographers.Several nature study routes have been developed throughout the area, including dirt walking paths and wooden bridges that pass through forests and wetland zones. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, cool breezes from the reservoir, and shaded natural surroundings. The area is ideal for relaxation, cycling, photography, and family-friendly environmental learning activities focused on wildlife and ecosystems.

Facilities at Suan Sa-on include parking areas, restrooms, resting pavilions, and small welfare shops for visitors. The attraction is especially popular during the cool season and public holidays due to its calm environment and convenient location near Lam Pao Dam, allowing travelers to combine visits with nearby attractions around the reservoir. The best time to visit is between November and February when the weather is cool and comfortable, the landscape is lush and green, and migratory birds are abundant. During the rainy season, the forest becomes even more vibrant and wildlife sightings may increase, though visitors are advised to wear suitable footwear for muddy trails and bring mosquito repellent.
