“Ancient century-old sim with Vietnamese-influenced wood carvings and traditional stucco patterns, reflecting the authentic identity of Isan culture.”

Wat Sim Na Ko is an ancient temple of great importance in terms of religion, history, and the cultural heritage of the Phu Thai community in Kuchinarai District, Kalasin Province. The “sim” or ordination hall of this temple is the core structure that reflects traditional Isan vernacular architecture that has been remarkably well preserved. The sim was built based on the concept of Lan Chang–influenced Isan Buddhist architecture, emphasizing simplicity, strength, and practical use. The structure features thick walls, small windows, and no reinforced concrete, relying entirely on traditional local construction wisdom.

The materials used are local innovations, such as clay mixed with salt, natural resin, and other organic materials, which enhance the building’s durability and allow it to survive for many generations. In terms of art, the structure reflects a blend of Isan folk art, Lan Chang artistic influence, and Vietnamese-style craftsmanship. This is especially evident in the carved wooden elements found on the gables and other architectural components, featuring floral motifs and symbolic animal patterns.Inside the sim, an ancient Buddha image is enshrined as the spiritual center of the community. The interior is simple, peaceful, and designed for religious ceremonies and meditation practice.

The temple also plays an important role as a spiritual and cultural center for the local Phu Thai people, serving as a place for preserving traditions, cultural practices, and local identity closely connected with Buddhism. The surrounding environment is shaded by large trees, making it ideal for historical study, architectural appreciation, and photography—especially in the early morning and late afternoon when natural light highlights the texture of the clay walls and intricate wood carvings.
