“An ancient pagoda believed to enshrine the relics of four Buddhas and serves as a monument to the prosperity of the ancient Sri Kotrabun Kingdom.”

Phra That Sri Kotrabong stands majestically not far from the town of Thakhek in Khammouane Province, Laos. It is a highly revered historical and spiritual site with a long and rich history.

According to local beliefs and legends, the pagoda is thought to have been built around the 6th century BE. It was constructed as a monument to King Phraya Sri Kotrabong, the powerful ruler of the ancient Sri Kotrabun Kingdom, and to enshrine the relics of the four Buddhas of the present era, namely Phra Kakusandha Buddha, Phra Konagamana Buddha, Phra Kassapa Buddha, and Phra Kotama Buddha (the present Buddha). The legend states that under the guidance of venerable monks who came to spread Buddhism, King Sumintharath undertook the construction of the pagoda to honor the king and to house the sacred relics in this holy land.

Phra That Sri Kotrabong has a deep connection to Phra That Phanom in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, which is located on the opposite bank of the Mekong River. Both pagodas are considered the twin sacred stupas of the ancient Sri Kotrabun Kingdom, reflecting the strong historical and cultural bond between the people of both sides of the river throughout the ages.

Architecturally, the pagoda has a square base similar to Phra That Phanom but is smaller in size and features different decorative patterns. Within the temple grounds, there are other interesting structures, such as a large Buddha statue and a monument to King Phraya Sri Kotrabong, which serve as a spiritual center for the people of Thakhek.

Phra That Sri Kotrabong is not just an ancient monument; it is a symbol of the cultural connection and faith between Thailand and Laos. Visitors can experience a sense of spiritual tranquility and learn about the history of this ancient kingdom.
