“ Two cliff-carved Buddha images in Dvaravati style, over 1,200 years old. The lower image is easily accessible, while the upper one requires climbing a wooden staircase. There is a scenic viewpoint and a peaceful atmosphere. ”

Phra Phuttha Rup Sathan Phu Po is an important archaeological site located within Wat In Prathan Phon, Phu Po Subdistrict, Mueang Kalasin District, Kalasin Province, Thailand. It is situated in a natural sandstone mountain area characterized by layered cliffs that fit the geological conditions for carving Buddhist art directly into rock surfaces. This landscape contributes to the site’s significant religious, historical, and archaeological value. The site is notable for two reclining Buddha images carved directly into natural cliff faces. These artworks are believed to date back to the late Dvaravati period or represent a continued local Isan artistic tradition influenced by early Buddhist beliefs. The carvings are estimated to be over 1,200 years old, reflecting the presence of ancient communities that once used the mountain area as a spiritual center.

Both Buddha images are created using high-relief carving techniques on natural sandstone cliffs without any constructed shrine buildings covering them. This rare characteristic in northeastern Thailand demonstrates the integration of natural landscape and sacred space, reflecting the ancient belief that mountains and nature itself are sacred and inseparable from religious practice. The first Buddha image is located at the base of the hill. It is approximately 3.3 meters long and is easily accessible for worshippers and visitors. This lower level serves as the entry point into the sacred area and represents the more accessible spiritual space for the local community. The second Buddha image is located on the upper cliff level and requires climbing a wooden staircase along the mountainside of about 80 meters. This upper image is larger, measuring approximately 4.8 meters in length, and is considered more visually prominent and complete. Its elevated position creates a peaceful and secluded atmosphere suitable for meditation and spiritual reflection.

Along the path to the upper site, visitors pass through a natural walking trail surrounded by forest and limestone cliffs. The journey is not only physical but also spiritual, gradually guiding visitors away from everyday distractions into a calmer and more contemplative environment. From a geographical perspective, Phu Po Mountain consists of sandstone formations that are suitable for carving, which explains why ancient artisans selected this site for creating religious imagery. The elevated and quiet location also reflects the ancient concept of sacred mountains, often used as places of retreat for monks and spiritual practitioners.Overall, Phra Phuttha Rup Sathan Phu Po is not only a religious tourist attraction but also an important cultural heritage site of Kalasin Province. It offers deep insight into the relationship between humans, nature, art, and Buddhism, preserving its value as a peaceful and historically significant destination for cultural and spiritual tourism to this day.
