“A significant historical site linked to King Taksin the Great, featuring a rare Maha-Ut ordination hall and revered shrines respected by the people of Tak.”

Wat Somdet Phra Chao Taksin Maharaj – Wat Doi Khoi Khao Kaew is located on a small hill not far from the Ping River. It is regarded as one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Tak and is also known as “Wat Phra Chao Tak.”

History

Archaeological excavations and restoration works by the Fine Arts Department revealed that this area had been a settlement and religious site for two historical periods:

Period 1: Evidence of prehistoric settlements dating back approximately 1,500–2,000 years.
Period 2 (Ayutthaya Period): A community associated with the construction of warships during the reign of King Maha Chakkraphat. It is also connected to King Taksin the Great, who, during his time as Phraya Tak, is believed to have stationed his troops and performed spiritual divination at this very location.

Points of Interest

Maha-Ut Ordination Hall: A late Ayutthaya architectural structure with only one entrance—used for sacred rituals requiring spiritual sanctity.
Shrine of King Taksin the Great & His Parents: Revered spots where locals come to pay respects and offer prayers.
Ancient Chedi & Replica Buddha Footprint: Important historical remains reflecting the prosperity of ancient Rahaeng town.

Current Status

Although there are no resident monks, wandering forest monks occasionally stay for meditation. The temple remains a spiritual center for the people of Tak.
