“Organic Agriculture Learning and Development Center, in line with the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, amidst the pristine atmosphere of Wang Nam Khiao District, offers visitors the opportunity to visit organic vegetable plots and participate in sustainable agriculture learning activities.”
Wang Nam Khiao Organic Agriculture Center, initiated in Amphoe Wang Nam Khiao, stands as a successful model for restoring soil fertility and achieving sustainable agriculture. The center originated in 1998 from a strong consensus among local farmers determined to cease the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which were severely impacting both the local ecosystem and community health. In 2001, the center was graciously placed under the Royal Initiative of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (Rama IX), establishing it as a key resource for studying, researching, and systematically disseminating knowledge on natural, non-toxic agriculture.
The core philosophy guiding the center's operations is the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, emphasizing self-reliance, safe food production, and natural resource conservation. Visitors gain comprehensive knowledge, from upstream to downstream processes, through diverse learning bases and hands-on workshops. These include stations for producing effective compost without turning, creating high-efficiency microbial liquid fertilizers, and generating wood vinegar (pyroligneous acid) for safe pest control. Furthermore, training is provided on techniques for crop rotation and intercropping to naturally enrich the soil, eliminating the need for chemical inputs.
The center's grounds are clearly demarcated, featuring demonstration plots for seasonal crops, integrated farming areas (mixed-crop/rice-fish systems), organic fruit orchards, and standardized nursery greenhouses. The produce grown here is highly regarded for its safety and superior quality, including various types of salad greens, multiple varieties of mushrooms, and rare medicinal herbs. These products are channeled through the center's cooperative store, where they are sold at fair prices. Beyond being a safe food producer, the center serves as the hub for a strong network of organic farmers in Wang Nam Khiao and the surrounding regions, regularly hosting training sessions and seminars to share expertise with new farmers and interested individuals.
Additionally, the center functions as a Community Enterprise Center (Wisa-Kit Chumchon), offering accommodation for long-term study visitors. It also operates a restaurant specializing in healthy menus prepared with fresh, non-toxic ingredients grown directly on site. This holistic approach generates stable and sustainable income for the community. Visitors, therefore, not only enjoy the beautiful scenery of Wang Nam Khiao but also witness firsthand the concrete success of transitioning agricultural practices from chemical dependence to natural sustainability.
