“An ecotourism gem featuring traditional paddleboat tours to spot rare freshwater jellyfish and thousands of colorful butterflies along clear, scenic rapids.”
Bang Rachan Rapids, located in Nong Mae Na Subdistrict, Khao Kho District, Phetchabun Province, is a natural waterway in the upper reaches of the Khek River. It features rocky rapids interspersed with flowing water and shallow pools. The surrounding landscape consists of mountainous forests and the headwaters of the Thung Salaeng Luang National Park, resulting in a rich ecosystem and high biodiversity. This is especially true for riparian plants, aquatic insects, and small aquatic animals that thrive in the clear water and calmer currents depending on the season.
The characteristics of the rapids and the Khek River in this area change significantly with the seasons. During the rainy season (approximately June to October), water levels rise and the current is strong, making some areas turbulent and unsuitable for boating or swimming. However, during the dry season (approximately November to May), water levels decrease, the current calms down, and the water becomes clearer in many sections, allowing for a better view of the rocks and underwater natural features.
A popular tourist activity in this area is boat tours offered by the local community. They typically use small boats to take tourists on a leisurely stroll along the quieter rapids and pools. Along the route, tourists will experience the natural atmosphere of the riverside forest, including the sound of flowing water, birdsong, and the variety of seasonal insects, as well as aquatic plants and small creatures that reflect the health of the ecosystem in the Ton Khek River area.
During certain times of the year, if the water is calm and clear enough, there may be a chance to see small freshwater creatures such as freshwater jellyfish, which are rarely found and require specific natural conditions, including temperature, still water, and water cleanliness. However, sightings of this species cannot be guaranteed every day or every season; it depends significantly on the environmental conditions at that time.
Furthermore, the rapids area is significant as a community-based tourism area where local villagers participate in management, including guiding tours, maintaining the trails, and providing information about the natural environment and local way of life. This makes tourism in this area not only a relaxing experience but also an opportunity to learn about the ecosystem and the community's culture.
