“This waterfall is a natural water source characterized by a long rocky rapids formation, where water flows across a wide rock terrace and splits into small and large cascades according to the varying elevations of the rock layers”
Kaeng Pho Waterfall is located in the Phu Si Than Wildlife Sanctuary, Khamcha-i District, Mukdahan Province. It is a natural tourist attraction formed by a watershed system on the Phu Si Than mountain range, where the geology consists of alternating layers of sandstone and sedimentary rock. This creates a broad rocky landscape rather than a typical tall cliff waterfall. The waterfall is formed by multiple natural streams that converge along rock fractures, then flow over gently sloping terrain and spread into thin sheets of water across a wide rock terrace before gradually descending in a series of small cascades. As a result, the waterfall features both cascade and rapid characteristics rather than a single vertical drop. The wide and continuous rock terrace allows water to spread beautifully during the rainy season, when strong flows create clear curtain-like water patterns and dynamic currents. In the dry season, the water level drops, revealing the rock formations more clearly, making the site suitable for studying natural rock structures and erosion processes. The surrounding area is a mixed forest of dry dipterocarp and deciduous forest, which remains highly rich in biodiversity. Common plant species include teak, dipterocarp, and rosewood, along with moisture-loving ground plants such as ferns and mosses. The area also serves as a habitat for small wildlife such as forest birds, squirrels, and reptiles commonly found in natural ecosystems.
Visitors typically use the rocky terrace as a resting area, bringing mats for picnics and enjoying shallow water areas where the current is not strong. Since the site remains largely natural, there are few commercial facilities, creating a quiet and close-to-nature atmosphere. However, the rock surfaces are often slippery due to algae, especially during the rainy season, so caution is required when walking or entering the water. In terms of ecological importance, Kaeng Pho Waterfall plays a vital role as part of the upstream watershed in the Phu Si Than Wildlife Sanctuary. It helps regulate water flow, reduce soil erosion, and support biodiversity in the mountainous areas of Mukdahan Province, making it important both for tourism and environmental conservation.
