“ Natural lotus ponds atop the mountain, prehistoric rock paintings, vast stone fields, stunning sunset viewpoints, and scenic hiking trails through beautiful dry dipterocarp forests. ”

Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park is an important natural conservation area in northeastern Thailand, covering parts of Mukdahan, Yasothon, and Amnat Charoen provinces. The park headquarters and main tourist attractions are located in Nikhom Kham Soi District, Mukdahan Province. The landscape consists mainly of complex sandstone mountain ranges with elevations averaging 350–420 meters above sea level. These formations were created by the uplift of ancient sandstone layers from the Phu Phan geological formation millions of years ago, resulting in distinctive stone terraces, cliffs, rock basins, and unusual natural scenery. The name “Phu Sa Dok Bua” originates from its most remarkable natural feature — numerous natural rock pools scattered across the mountaintop. These basins are capable of storing rainwater throughout the year, even during the dry season. Inside the pools grow native lotus plants known locally as “Bua Sai,” creating a rare and beautiful phenomenon seldom found in sandstone mountain environments. Many visitors hike to the summit during the late rainy and early cool seasons, when the lotus ponds are at their most vibrant and the surrounding forests are lush and green. The park’s nature trails are another major attraction. Visitors can walk across vast sandstone fields naturally sculpted by erosion into unique patterns, alternating with dry dipterocarp forests, mixed deciduous forests, and endemic plant species native to the Phu Phan mountain range. During the early winter season, the foliage changes into shades of yellow, orange, and red, giving the area an atmosphere reminiscent of a temperate forest.

The “Phu Pha Taem” area is an important archaeological site featuring prehistoric rock paintings estimated to be around 3,000 years old. The paintings stretch across sandstone cliffs for more than 60 meters and mainly depict human handprints, geometric symbols, and red mineral pigments. Archaeologists believe these paintings were connected to rituals, beliefs, and the lifestyles of prehistoric communities, serving as valuable evidence of early human settlement in the upper Mekong region.Another popular highlight is “Phu Pha Hom,” a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Phu Phan mountain range, Huai Hin Lap Reservoir, and the surrounding forests. During sunset, golden light reflects beautifully across the rocky landscape and distant mountains, creating a peaceful and picturesque atmosphere ideal for photography and relaxation.Beyond its natural beauty, the area also holds historical significance. In the past, the park served as a stronghold of the Communist Party of Thailand due to its remote and mountainous terrain. Hidden caves, former campsites, and old supply routes can still be found within the forest, adding an important historical dimension to the park.

Today, Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park provides essential tourist facilities including a visitor center, accommodation, camping grounds, restrooms, and marked nature trails, while still preserving its rich natural environment. The park is especially suitable for hikers, nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, landscape photographers, and travelers seeking the peaceful atmosphere of northeastern Thailand’s forest landscapes.
