“Phu Luang is a land of remarkable biodiversity, known for the red rhododendron (century-old rose) that blooms in winter. Rare plant species, such as terrestrial orchids and lady’s slipper orchids, thrive here alongside pine trees. The sanctuary also features dinosaur footprints over 120 million years old on sandstone slabs, making it a must-visit destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts.”

Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1974 and covers more than 560 square kilometers. It preserves large forested areas that are vital water sources for Loei Province. The name “Phu Luang” means “great mountain” or “mountain of the king.” Its highest peak reaches 1,571 meters, resulting in a cool climate throughout most of the year. The terrain consists of complex sandstone mountains with mixed forests, including hill evergreen forests, two-needle and three-needle pine forests, and savannah grasslands. This makes it one of the most biodiverse areas in northeastern Thailand.

The sanctuary is home to many cold-climate and rare plants, particularly the red rhododendron (Rhododendron), which blooms between February and March on broad sandstone slabs such as Phra Somdej and Pha Tlein. Various wild orchids, including lady’s slipper orchids, grow along the pine forest. During the rainy season, colorful wildflowers like silver buttons and golden chain bloom across the grasslands.

Phu Luang also holds geological significance as dinosaur footprints over 120 million years old have been discovered in the sandstone layers, attracting researchers and science-oriented tourists.

The wildlife includes gaur, serow, wild elephants, muntjac, deer, and rare birds such as peafowl, white-headed babblers, and various fruit-eating birds. This makes the sanctuary ideal for birdwatchers and nature researchers.

For hiking enthusiasts, Phu Luang offers several nature trails:

  • Lan Suriyan Trail: 1–2 hours, mostly flat, passing through open forests and grasslands, suitable for all levels. Offers close views of red rhododendrons and wildflowers.

  • Phra Somdej & Pha Tlein Trail: 3–5 hours, longer and more challenging, ideal for experienced hikers. Features expansive sandstone slabs and seasonal flower blooms.

  • Summit Trail: Nearly a full-day hike, suitable for well-prepared hikers. The summit is surrounded by pine forests and savannah grasslands that change color with the seasons.

Hiking in Phu Luang not only provides physical challenge and scenic beauty but also offers peace and a sense of the forest’s grandeur. Limiting visitor numbers and requiring guides helps maintain the sanctuary’s pristine natural condition, making it perfect for those seeking an immersive ecotourism experience.
