“A scenic riverside destination that transforms into a wide sand beach during the dry season. Visitors can walk down to the riverbank, observe the traditional gold-panning lifestyle, and purchase unique patterned stones from the Mekong River as memorable souvenirs.”
Ban Hat Bia is a small, tranquil riverside community in Pak Chom District, Loei Province, located along the scenic Chiang Khan–Pak Chom route. This peaceful village is most vibrant during the dry season (February to May), when the Mekong River’s water level recedes to reveal long stretches of fine white sand and fascinating rock formations carved naturally by the current. During this time, the area becomes a lively destination, attracting visitors who wish to walk barefoot on the sand, enjoy the serene river views, and experience authentic local life.
One of the most distinctive traditions of Ban Hat Bia is gold panning, locally called “Len Kham.” This ancient practice, passed down for generations, involves villagers using wooden trays or metal pans to sift through sand and gravel from the river in search of tiny gold particles. It reflects the intimate bond between the villagers and the Mekong River, as well as their resilience and wisdom in living harmoniously with nature. The activity also offers visitors a chance to witness — or even try — this rare, hands-on cultural experience.
Another local treasure is the Mekong River stones, or “Hin Bia.” These smooth, round stones are naturally shaped by decades of water flow and come in various colors, patterns, and textures. Some resemble natural artworks with unique markings. Locals carefully collect and sell these stones along the roadside, turning them into meaningful souvenirs that represent the spirit of Ban Hat Bia — simple, beautiful, and naturally crafted.
In addition to its cultural appeal, Ban Hat Bia is also a lovely spot to enjoy the sunrise and sunset over the Mekong River. In the evening, the sunlight glimmers across the water like liquid gold while small fishing boats drift by, creating a tranquil and picturesque atmosphere — a perfect moment of peace away from the noise of modern life.
