Wang Yai Waterfall is a medium-sized natural waterfall located within the Phanom Dong Rak Wildlife Sanctuary in Kantharalak District, Sisaket Province. The area is part of an important watershed forest along the Phanom Dong Rak mountain range near the Thai–Cambodian border. The surrounding environment remains highly fertile, featuring dry evergreen forests, deciduous dipterocarp forests, and rare native plant species, allowing the waterfall to maintain flowing water throughout the rainy season and early winter. The waterfall’s distinctive feature is its wide sandstone cliff stretching along the Khayung Stream. Although the waterfall is approximately 5 meters high, its beauty comes from the broad curtain-like streams cascading gracefully into the natural pool below, creating a striking landscape. The scenery becomes especially impressive after rainfall, when the water fully covers the cliff face and reflects sunlight beautifully.
Above the waterfall is a large natural sandstone terrace with several shallow clear-water pools, ideal for relaxing, swimming, or enjoying a family picnic. Visitors can walk across the rock terrace and experience the surrounding nature up close. The lower section of the waterfall contains deeper pools and stronger currents during the rainy season, making it more suitable for experienced swimmers and requiring extra caution. The surrounding forest is also home to various medicinal plants, seasonal wild mushrooms, and wildlife such as birds, squirrels, and colorful butterflies. Nature enthusiasts can explore the surrounding nature trails, especially during the late rainy season when vibrant “champagne mushrooms” can be found growing on logs and damp forest floors, adding another unique charm to the area.
Beyond its natural beauty, Wang Yai Waterfall is also a popular retreat for locals and camping enthusiasts due to its peaceful atmosphere, cool weather, and shaded surroundings provided by large forest trees. It is an ideal destination for travelers seeking to escape the busy city and enjoy nature in a tranquil setting. The best time to visit is between August and December, when the waterfall is at its fullest, the forest is lush green, and the weather is pleasantly cool. Early mornings are particularly beautiful, with light mist hovering above the stream and the soothing sounds of nature creating a perfect atmosphere for relaxation, photography, and eco-tourism.
