“Admire the ancient Khmer-style brick architecture that remains beautifully preserved, and pay respect to the statue of Luang Pho Mum (Phra Khru Prasat Khantakhun)”

Prasat Yer is an ancient Khmer-style archaeological site believed to have been constructed around the 11th–12th centuries during the later period of Khmer influence. It was originally built as a Hindu sanctuary and served as a ritual center for the local community. Over time, the surrounding area developed into a settlement of the “Ye” ethnic group, which has its own distinct language and cultural identity, giving the site both historical and cultural significance.

The sanctuary features a small single brick prasat built on a laterite base, facing east in accordance with Hindu cosmology. Its structure is relatively simple compared to larger Khmer temples, as it functioned primarily as a community-level religious site rather than a royal center. Although minimally decorated, it still clearly reflects Khmer architectural traditions, especially in its brick construction techniques and balanced proportions that emphasize sacred spatial design.

Today, Prasat Yer is located within Wat Prasat Yer Nuea, creating a blend of Hindu-origin ancient architecture and contemporary Buddhist religious use. The local community continues to respect the site as a spiritual center and also venerates the statue of Luang Pho Mum, a well-known monk of the area enshrined within the temple grounds. As a result, the site holds not only archaeological value but also strong religious and cultural significance for the community.

Overall, Prasat Yer represents both a historical trace of Khmer civilization in southern Isan and a living cultural space where ancient heritage and local traditions continue to coexist harmoniously today.
