“Explore prehistoric human coffins and the cave’s beautiful stalactites and stalagmites.”
Tham Phi Man is located in Tham Lod Subdistrict, Pang Mapha District, Mae Hong Son Province. Locals often call the cave where prehistoric human coffins were found “Tham Phi Man.” About 90 sites have been discovered in Pang Mapha District, but this particular cave is the most widely known and easily accessible, as it has electric lighting installed for convenient viewing without the need for a guide.
Inside Tham Phi Man, the cave is large but the passages are not very deep. It houses a collection of Phi Man coffins and fragments of prehistoric pottery. There are 25 wooden coffins, or 30 coffin lids, all intact. The cave contains the remains of up to 154 individuals, with some coffins holding as many as 18 people. According to archaeological research conducted by the Silpakorn University team between 2013 and 2016, DNA analysis shows that these human remains are more than 1,600–2,100 years old, with interments in the wooden coffins occurring over a period of more than 400 years.
