“Explore the beautiful stalactites and stalagmites and experience an ancient cave in a serene natural setting.”
Tham Mae Lana is accessible only from the dry to cool season, as water levels are too high during the rainy season to enter the cave. Visitors are advised to contact a local guide in advance. The cave is suitable for adventure enthusiasts, as the journey requires wading through streams along the path to the cave. Some sections are knee-deep, others waist-deep, and travelers must climb rocks and pass through narrow passages.
Inside, the cave is completely dark, making it a challenging to very challenging cave tour. Tham Mae Lana is the longest cave in the region, stretching up to 12 km, with the Mae Lana stream running through it. The first exploration of the cave took 15 hours to traverse from entrance to exit, and even then, it could not be fully explored.
There are two designated routes for visiting the cave:
-
2.5 km route: Takes about 4 hours, involves wading through water, climbing large rocks, and reaching a large underground pool with some well-preserved stalactites and stalagmites.
-
5 km route: A full-day route, more difficult than the shorter one, passing through darkness to reach an internal waterfall. Visitors can see blind cave fish in the pitch-dark environment.
