Ban Luk Wood Carving Village is a traditional artisan community located near the Wang River in Mae Tha, Lampang. The village is widely known for its outstanding wood carving craftsmanship and has been developed as an OTOP Tourism Village, preserving the artistic heritage of northern Thailand.
Originally, villagers began carving leftover logs and tree stumps into household items. Over time, these skills evolved into intricate decorative wood carvings and souvenirs. The knowledge has been passed down from generation to generation, making wood carving a common skill among many households in the village.
Signature Rain Tree Wood Carvings
Most sculptures here are made from rain tree wood (Chamchuri wood), a soft wood with attractive grain patterns that is ideal for carving. Local craftsmen are particularly famous for creating wooden elephant sculptures, known for their detailed textures and elegant posture that closely resemble real elephants.
In addition to elephants, visitors can also find many other carved figures such as:
-
Owls (symbol of wisdom and good fortune)
-
Mythical fish sculptures
-
Horses
-
Deer and other wildlife
There are also relief carvings, wooden furniture, and decorative home accessories that are popular among both Thai and international visitors.
A Living Open-Air Art Gallery
Walking through Ban Luk Village feels like visiting a living open-air art gallery. Visitors can see artisans working in front of their homes, performing different stages of the carving process, including:
-
Shaping the wood
-
Sanding and smoothing
-
Painting and finishing
Along the village roads, you will notice large wooden elephant statues standing proudly in front of houses and workshops, creating unique photo spots and giving the entire community a distinctive artistic atmosphere.
