“Wang Kaew Waterfall features more than 110 cascading limestone tiers with clear flowing water and naturally rough rock surfaces that are less slippery, allowing visitors to explore the waterfall while enjoying the lush rainforest that forms an important headwater of the Wang River.”

Wang Kaew Waterfall is located within Doi Luang National Park, a vast protected forest covering approximately 731,250 rai (about 1,170 square kilometers) across the provinces of Lampang, Phayao, and Chiang Rai. The park is known for its rich ecosystems, mountain landscapes, and important watershed forests that support many rivers in Northern Thailand.

Among the natural attractions within the park, Wang Kaew Waterfall is considered one of the most spectacular. The waterfall originates from mountain streams deep within dense tropical forests and flows down the limestone mountainside in a series of more than 110 cascading tiers, creating a breathtaking white curtain of water stretching along the forested slope.

One unique characteristic of the waterfall is its limestone formation. Unlike many waterfalls where rocks become slippery due to moss, the limestone surface here is naturally rough, making it easier and safer for visitors to walk along certain parts of the waterfall while enjoying the scenery. Some natural pools along the lower tiers even display a light bluish tint and provide refreshing spots where visitors can relax and enjoy the cool mountain water.

The surrounding environment is a lush tropical rainforest, filled with large trees and diverse plant species that provide shade and a refreshing atmosphere throughout the year. A nature trail also allows visitors to explore deeper into the forest and hike toward the upper levels of the waterfall. While the trail becomes steeper in some sections, it offers rewarding views of the cascading water and the surrounding mountains.

Because the area lies within a limestone mountain range, several natural caves can also be found nearby. Inside these caves are beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, including the notable Tham Nang Phaya Pang Din Fai Cave, which attracts visitors interested in geological formations and cave exploration.

Beyond its scenic beauty, Wang Kaew Waterfall also plays an important ecological role as a headwater source of the Wang River, which has long supported communities throughout Lampang Province. With its dramatic landscape, pristine forest, and refreshing natural environment, Wang Kaew Waterfall remains one of the most remarkable natural destinations in Lampang.

How to Get There
  • By Car: From Lampang city, take Highway 1035 (Lampang – Chae Hom – Wang Nuea) for approximately 120 kilometers. Upon reaching Wang Nuea District, turn onto Highway 120 (toward Phayao), then turn left onto Highway 1103 and continue for about 24 kilometers until reaching Doi Luang National Park Protection Unit 1 (Wang Kaew), the entrance to the waterfall.

Travel Tips
  • September to December offers clear water, lush green forests, and the most beautiful scenery.

  • Wear comfortable hiking shoes, as some sections of the trail include roots, rocks, and slopes.

  • Bring a small bag for your trash and help keep the natural area clean.

  • If the water suddenly turns muddy or reddish, leave the area immediately due to possible flash floods.
