“Former Hokkaido Government Office Building”
The Former Hokkaido Government Office is a notable red-brick structure constructed in 1888, showcasing American neo-baroque architectural style. Serving as a symbol of Hokkaido, the building now hosts historical exhibitions, a museum shop, a tourist information center, and a conference room.
What sets the Former Hokkaido Government Office apart is its distinctive architectural elements, rarely seen in Japan. Notable features include its grand double doors and curved glass, reminiscent of the Massachusetts State House in the United States. These features serve both aesthetic and functional purposes, as the double doors are designed to keep out the harsh Hokkaido winter cold, while the darker bricks in the lower section of the outer walls were heated at higher temperatures to withstand greater pressure.
Open to the public, the Former Hokkaido Government Office offers various facilities for exploration. Alongside a library and historical archives, visitors can explore the Gallery of Hokkaido History, which presents the rich heritage of Japan's northern island. Additionally, guests can visit the former governor's office and admire the artwork displayed throughout the building's corridors.
