“Walk along safe boardwalks around the volcanic crater, visit Oyunuma sulfur pond and Mud Pond, soak in foot onsen, and enjoy the Night Illumination (Onibi-no-Michi) during seasonal events.”

Jigokudani-Hell Valley is an active volcanic crater located north of Noboribetsu City, continuously emitting steam and sulfur gases, which create a strong sulfur scent throughout the area. Visitors can safely explore the main walking trails around the crater, as well as two additional nature trails that take 30–40 minutes to complete, allowing access to other points of interest.

The valley features the Oyunuma sulfur pond (温泉大湯沼, Oyunuma) at approximately 50°C and a nearby Mud Pond (泥湯池, Mud Pond), which clearly demonstrate the geothermal activity. Flowing water from these ponds can be used for foot onsen and also serves as the source of hot spring water for Noboribetsu, containing up to nine different minerals believed to have various health benefits.

One of the valley’s most unique attractions is the Night Illumination, known as Onibi-no-Michi. In this event, the boardwalks are lit after sunset, transforming the valley into a mysterious and almost otherworldly scene. The combination of rising steam from the hot springs, glowing lights, and surrounding snow (during winter) creates a striking visual effect, often described as looking like a “scene from hell.” The illumination usually runs until around 11:00 PM, but visiting before sunset is recommended for safety. The event is especially popular in the winter season, when the contrast between the hot steam and cold air enhances the visual impact, making it an unforgettable experience for photographers and tourists alike.

The surrounding area offers convenient facilities such as hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops, allowing visitors to plan a full day of sightseeing and relaxation.
