“Enjoy panoramic views of the star-shaped fort from Goryokaku Tower, admire cherry blossoms in spring, and explore Japanese history at the Former Magistrate Office museum.”
Fort Goryokaku is an iconic star-shaped fort located in Hakodate city. It was Japan’s first Western-style star fort, constructed in 1857 during the late Edo period by the Tokugawa shogunate as a defensive base to protect against foreign invasion amid Japan’s opening to the world.
Located about 4 kilometers from Hakodate Station, the fort is easily accessible by tram. Visitors will see the 90-meter tall Goryokaku Tower, featuring an elevator that takes guests to a panoramic observation deck offering stunning views of the fort and the city.
Historically, the fort was the administrative center and site of the last battle of the Tokugawa shogunate during the Boshin War before the Meiji Restoration. Today, it is a public park known for its more than 1,600 cherry trees that bloom spectacularly in early May. Autumn foliage in October also paints the area in vibrant colors.
Nearby, the Former Magistrate Office Museum offers insight into Edo period governance and lifestyle. Visitors can also rent boats to paddle through the star-shaped moat for a unique perspective.
