“Renowned for its creative animal enclosures and the world-famous penguin parade in winter, Asahiyama Zoo offers visitors close-up encounters with wildlife in natural-like settings.”

Asahiyama Zoo is located at the eastern foothills of Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, about 20 kilometers from the city center. During summer, the zoo showcases a diverse range of animals including aquatic life, mammals, and birds. Some animals are kept in enclosures, while others roam in naturalistic settings. Featured species include brown bears, red pandas, polar bears, Japanese cranes, reindeer, orangutans, chimpanzees, tigers, lions, leopards, hawks, giraffes, owls, seals, and penguins.

In winter, the zoo transforms into a “Polar Zoo,” becoming a haven for cold-climate animals to display playful behaviors in the snow. The highlight is the famous penguin parade, where penguins march outdoors in the snowy landscape, delighting visitors. Tropical animals are kept indoors in warm environments during this season.

Asahiyama Zoo is widely regarded as one of the best zoos in the world due to its innovative design that mimics the natural habitats of its animals. Unlike typical zoos where animals are confined to cages, this zoo creates environments that closely resemble each species’ natural living conditions.

One of the unique features of Asahiyama Zoo is the opportunity for visitors to observe animals from various perspectives and engage in interactive activities. This close encounter with wildlife offers an educational and memorable experience for all visitors.

The penguin parade in winter is the zoo’s most famous attraction, drawing crowds eager to witness these charming birds waddling through the snow. The zoo is a perfect destination for families, nature lovers, and travelers of all ages seeking a genuine and immersive wildlife experience in Hokkaido.
