“The popular diving spot in Chumphon known for its beautiful coral reefs, especially the large and colorful Porites coral (Knob Coral) which is remarkably abundant and well-preserved.”
Koh Lak Rad also locally called “Koh E-Rad,” is a small limestone island located in the waters of Chumphon under the supervision of the Mu Ko Chumphon National Park. The island consists of medium-sized rocky cliffs rising above the sea surface, with no beach area for relaxation, but it is considered one of the most stunning diving sites in Chumphon.
The surrounding area features naturally rich coral reefs, including both hard and soft corals in vibrant colors. The highlight is the “Porites coral,” which forms large, rounded coral heads—some more than 2 meters in diameter. This type of coral grows slowly and is rare in many parts of Thailand, making Koh Lak Rad an important dive destination frequently visited by experienced divers.
The island is home to various species of fish such as parrotfish, clownfish, butterflyfish, lionfish, and sea anemones that thrive among the coral reefs. This makes the area lively and highly suitable for underwater photography.
On clear days, the sea becomes crystal blue, allowing divers to spot coral reefs from the surface. Sunlight reflecting through the water creates sparkling patterns, making the scenery resemble an underwater painting. Visitors can enjoy snorkeling around the island or choose scuba diving to explore coral reefs and marine creatures up close at depths of around 8–20 meters.
Koh Lak Rad is often included in one-day diving tour programs around the Mu Ko Chumphon archipelago. Popular routes usually pair it with nearby islands such as Koh Mattra, Koh Lawa, and Koh Langka Jiew. Travelers can enjoy diving, relaxing on the boat, and admiring the views of the Chumphon islands.
Since the island has no shade or facilities, tourism activities are focused mainly on the sea—diving, snorkeling, taking photos, and enjoying lunch on the boat. The national park and tour operators also control visitor numbers to protect the marine ecosystem.
