“Concrete staircase with 396 steps to reach the summit Panoramic 3-bay view: Prachuap Bay, Manao Bay, Noi Bay Temple at the top housing a Buddhist relic and a replica of the Buddha’s footprint Monkeys (long-tailed macaques) along the path”
Khao Chong Krachok stands approximately 245 meters above sea level by the coast. Visitors climb about 396 concrete steps to reach the summit. The ascent is considered a good physical challenge, rewarded by a stunning view.
-
At the Summit: The summit is the location of Wat Thammikaram Worawihan, an ancient temple that has been renovated. It enshrines a Buddhist relic (Phra Borom Sarikathat) within a bell-shaped pagoda, and features a replica of the Buddha’s footprint for worship. It is a sacred place that perfectly blends Buddhist faith with natural beauty.
-
Origin of the Name and Natural Wonder: A distinctive rock formation at the top, naturally eroded over time, resembles a square mirror frame—this "mirror channel" is the origin of the name. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the three main bays (Ao Prachuap, Ao Manao, and Ao Koh Lak), the town of Prachuap Khiri Khan, the Tenasserim Hills, and the distant Koh Lak island, which is a provincial symbol.
-
Local Wildlife and Interaction: The path up the hill is teeming with a large population of macaque monkeys that are familiar with humans, making the hike interactive and lively. Visitors should be cautious with personal belongings (like hats and glasses) and must avoid feeding the monkeys to maintain their natural behavior and prevent aggression.
-
Value and Experience: The site offers a diverse experience, encompassing natural beauty, spiritual tranquility, and exceptional photographic opportunities, especially during sunrise, where the sun rises over the sea, and sunset, when the light beautifully bathes the landscape. Climbing the hill in the early morning or late afternoon is therefore highly recommended.
