“Stroll through a spacious university campus in central Sapporo, admire iconic tree-lined avenues, historic Western-style architecture, and a world-class university museum open to the public year-round.”
Hokkaido University was founded in 1876 as Sapporo Agricultural College as one of Japan’s oldest and most prestigious national universities. Its main campus covers approximately 1.8 million square meters and is often described as a “forest within the city.” The campus is open to the public and serves as a popular place for walking, jogging, relaxation, and sightseeing throughout the year.
Ginkgo Avenue
A famous 380-meter-long avenue lined with ginkgo trees. It is especially popular in late autumn when the leaves turn a brilliant golden yellow, while in other seasons it offers a calm and spacious atmosphere for walking and photography.
Poplar Avenue
A symbolic row of tall poplar trees representing the university’s identity. The area provides a quiet, elegant landscape that changes with the seasons. In winter, some paths may be partially inaccessible, but the scenery can still be enjoyed from nearby areas.
The Hokkaido University Museum
A must-visit attraction with free admission. The museum showcases exhibitions on natural science, history, and academic research, including impressive mammoth skeletons. The historic building offers a warm and comfortable indoor experience in all seasons.
Clark Memorial Statue
A statue honoring Dr. William S. Clark, one of the university’s founding figures, best known for his inspirational phrase:
“Boys, be ambitious!”
The statue is a meaningful photo spot and a symbol of Hokkaido University’s educational spirit.
Ono Pond
A small, peaceful pond located within the campus grounds. It is an ideal spot for relaxation, casual walks, and enjoying seasonal scenery, from fresh greenery to autumn colors and winter snow.
