“Japan’s first aquarium with real underwater observation windows built directly beneath a natural river, allowing live viewing of migrating salmon.”
Chitose Salmon Aquarium (Sake no Furusato Chitose Aquarium) is one of Japan’s most unique freshwater aquariums and a symbol of Chitose City, a region historically vital to salmon spawning in Hokkaido.
The main highlight is the Underwater Observation Room, featuring seven large glass panels installed directly beneath the Chitose River. Unlike conventional aquariums, visitors observe salmon and river wildlife in their real natural environment, changing daily with the seasons.
-
Late August – October: Peak season to witness tens of thousands of salmon swimming upstream (September is the most spectacular).
-
October – December: Natural spawning season.
-
January – February: Salmon eggs hatching (depending on natural conditions).
-
March – May: Juvenile salmon begin their journey downstream toward the sea.
Outside the building, visitors can see the iconic Indian Water Wheel (Indian Suishua), a large traditional salmon-catching wheel used for breeding purposes without harming the fish. It is installed in the river every year from July 1 to early December, making it a rare and valuable sight.
Inside the aquarium, the Giant Tank stands 5 meters tall and holds approximately 250 tons of water, showcasing large salmon species and sturgeon. Educational exhibits and interactive zones make this attraction ideal for families, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.
