“The slope up the hillside, looking down from the road leading up, offers a view of the port.”
Within the Motomachi area, there are many sightseeing spots, one of the most popular in Hakodate. The Japanese-style stone-paved walkway and the Western-style buildings create a romantic atmosphere.
Hachiman-zaka Slope is one of the four most scenic slopes in Hakodate (the other three are Motoi-zaka Slope, Saiwai-zaka Slope, and Daisan-zaka Slope).
The name “Hachiman-zaka” comes from the story that the Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine used to be located here. If you walk from the bay area near the Red Brick Warehouse up to Mt. Hakodate, you will see a view of the blue sky, the blue sea, and the stone-paved slope. This is a great view of Hakodate that is as beautiful as the night view of Hakodate. It is also one of the most popular views on the slopes of Hakodate.
If you look into the distance from the Hachimanzaka Slope, a cobblestone slope overlooking the port, you can see a wide road leading straight to Hakodate Bay, including the Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Mashumaru in Hakodate, which is anchored there.
From the Motoi-Zaka Slope near Motomachi Park, running parallel to the Hiyori-Zaka Slope, there is a promenade lined with charming old Japanese-style houses and buildings filled with an exotic atmosphere, where you can enjoy a luxurious view. In front of Hakodatenishi High School on Hachimanzaka Slope, it is a popular photo spot that is often used as a location for filming commercials and movies. In winter, the Hakodate Illumination is held, where trees along the paths sparkle and the stone-paved slopes are illuminated, adding to the beauty.
