“Marvel at the fusion of European, Chinese, and Malay architecture in a single building, featuring some of the most exquisite wood carvings on the Southern Peninsula”

Yaring Old Town Palace is a historical site of great significance and charm in Pattani Province. Built around 1885 by Phraya Phiphit Senamat, the Governor of Yaring at the time, the palace was designed to serve as both a private residence and the administrative center of the city. The structure is a large two-story building made of both wood and masonry, remarkably well-preserved for over a hundred years. The palace reflects an era when Thailand began integrating Western cultural influences with the traditional lifestyles of the local people.

The architectural highlight of this palace is the Sino-Portuguese style, which was highly popular in the port cities along the Malay Peninsula in the past. Visitors will see European-style arched windows and doors blended with Chinese-patterned transoms. However, what sets Yaring Old Town Palace apart is the seamless integration of Malay Art, particularly the intricate wood carvings on the staircases, air vents, and window frames. These patterns mostly feature floral and geometric designs, reflecting the beliefs and craftsmanship of Pattani artisans. The building is painted in a soft yellow, a color considered elegant and auspicious in local tradition

Upon entering the palace, you will find a spacious central hall with high ceilings that facilitate natural ventilation, keeping the interior cool year-round. The floors are made of large, polished wooden planks that shine brightly. Some original furniture and household items remain, offering a glimpse into what life was like over a century ago. The palace grounds are surrounded by a wide garden filled with large trees and various flowering plants, creating a peaceful, shaded, and mystical atmosphere as if stepping back into the era when the Governor still resided there.

For photographers and art enthusiasts, Yaring Old Town Palace is a treasure trove of perspectives and colors from the classic curved wooden staircases to the sunlight filtering through long windows and the vintage tones of the aged plaster walls. For students and history buffs, this is a living learning center. The palace remains under the care of the direct descendants of the Governor of Yaring, ensuring that the information shared is accurate and deeply rooted in a familial heritage passed down through generations.

A visit to Yaring Old Town Palace is not just about viewing an old house; it is about understanding the harmonious coexistence of diverse cultures, woven together through art and architecture that still stand proudly for us to admire today.
