“Canoeing–rafting–walking through water, seeing elephant-shaped stalactites, and spotting Kitti’s hog-nosed bat in Phung Chang Cave”

Phung Chang Cave (Phung Chang Cave)  is located inside “Elephant Mountain”, a large limestone mountain shaped like a reclining elephant in the center of Phang Nga, which is considered a major geographical landmark of Phang Nga Province. The cave is situated in the area representing the “belly of the elephant”, which is the origin of its name and clearly reflects the local landscape.

The cave was formed by the erosion of underground water in limestone layers over millions of years, creating a large interconnected cave system. Inside, there is a natural stream flowing all year round, resulting in high humidity that continuously supports the growth of stalactites and stalagmites. These formations are still developing and are therefore called “Living Stone.”

The cave is divided into several main zones, starting from the entrance chamber and water reception hall, which is the starting point for canoeing. This is followed by the main stream zone where visitors must ride bamboo rafts, surrounded by stalactite-covered cave walls. Deeper inside is a large chamber resembling a natural cathedral, before reaching the highlight area where visitors walk through narrow passages and uniquely shaped rock formations, considered the most beautiful photo spots of the journey.

The stalactites and stalagmites inside the cave are highly diverse and well-preserved, forming natural shapes such as elephants, fish, swans, flowers, and pagodas. In some areas, the calcium carbonate crystal surfaces reflect flashlight beams, creating sparkling effects similar to “cave diamonds,” producing a magical and mysterious underground atmosphere.

The visit to Phung Chang Cave takes approximately 45–60 minutes, depending on water levels and group speed. Although the distance is not long, the route is diverse, combining canoeing, bamboo rafting, and walking through water. It is considered an adventurous but not overly difficult activity, suitable for general tourists in normal physical condition.

In terms of safety, the route is fully supervised by local guides for every group, and complete safety equipment is provided. Water levels are generally not deep, but in some sections visitors may need to wade through water or balance on rafts. Elderly visitors and children can join, but should be closely supervised by staff.

Another major highlight is that the cave is home to the Kitti’s hog-nosed bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai), known as the smallest bat in the world and a rare protected species in Thailand. This makes the cave an important site for both eco-tourism and cave ecosystem conservation.

The best time to visit Phung Chang Cave is during the dry season to early rainy season (November–May), when water levels are suitable for boating and exploration. The cave remains cool throughout the year, and mornings offer the most peaceful atmosphere with fewer tourists, providing the best experience.

Overall, Phung Chang Cave is more than just a tourist cave; it is an adventurous journey beneath a limestone mountain combining nature, geology, and ecosystems. It offers a perfect blend of excitement, beauty, and mystery of the underground world, making it one of the most important Unseen Thailand attractions in Phang Nga Province.
