“Admire the Ayutthaya-style ordination hall enclosed by double walls, pay respect to Luang Pho To (Luang Pho Yim), and visit the birthplace of King Suea amid a solemn and historic atmosphere.”

Wat Pho Prathap Chang was constructed between 1699–1701 (B.E. 2242–2244) during the reign of King Suriyenthrathibodi (King Suea) of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. The temple was built as a royal memorial at the exact location of the king’s birth, traditionally believed to be beneath a Bodhi tree and a fig tree along the old Phichit River. As such, the temple holds exceptional historical and royal significance.

Magnificent Architecture

The ordination hall and assembly hall are large brick-and-mortar structures built on elevated bases. Narrow ventilation windows, known as barred light openings, reflect the distinctive style of late Ayutthaya architecture. The temple compound is enclosed by two layers of walls, symbolizing its status as a royally commissioned temple. In recognition of its cultural value, the Fine Arts Department registered the site as a national historical monument in 1935.

Luang Pho To (Luang Pho Yim)

The principal Buddha image enshrined in the ordination hall is Luang Pho To, also affectionately called Luang Pho Yim. This Mara-victory posture Buddha image features a gentle, smiling expression that conveys compassion and serenity. Locals believe that worshipping Luang Pho To brings peace, success, and good fortune.

Timeless Sacred Atmosphere

At the front of the temple stands a giant takhian tree estimated to be over 260 years old, with a trunk so large it takes seven people to encircle it. Within the temple grounds is a shrine dedicated to King Suea, highly revered by local residents. Nearby, a monument of King Suea was also erected to commemorate his legacy and contributions to the region.
