“Experience the past through the Keys to History, featuring a collection of traditional livelihoods and precious Buddhist art gathered throughout the lifetime of Sargent Major Doctor Thawee Buranakhet.”

Sargent Major Thawee Folk Museum did not begin with a massive budget, but rather from the love and appreciation of value of a man named Sargent Major Doctor Thawee Buranakhet. Decades ago, as Thailand was rapidly developing, ancient household items reflecting local wisdom were being discarded. Sargent Major Doctor Thawee Buranakhet felt a sense of regret that these items were disappearing. He began to collect and use his own personal funds to gradually purchase and gather traditional tools of the people in the lower Northern region, piece by piece. His goal was to create a place where future generations could see how our ancestors lived and how ingenious Thai people were in inventing various tools and utensils.

The primary reason for building this museum was Sargent Major Doctor Thawee Buranakhet's desire for it to be a lifelong learning center for youth and the general public. He believed that every object has a story and a soul hidden within. Creating this museum was not just about collecting antiques, but about preserving the local spirit from fading away over time. He dedicated his heart and soul to gathering tens of thousands of artifacts, eventually gaining international recognition and numerous quality awards. Sargent Major Doctor Thawee Buranakhet himself has also been honored as a National Artist.

Upon entering, you will find areas organized into sections for easy viewing, mainly divided into 4 important zones as follows:

  • History and Traditional Thai Building Zone: Provides an introduction to the biography of Sargent Major Doctor Thawee Buranakhet and the museum's founding, including rare old photographs of Phitsanulok city.

  • Local Tools and Utensils Zone: This highlight zone gathers household items, wickerwork, and all types of agricultural equipment, ranging from stone mortars and rice measuring buckets to ancient carts.

  • Animal Trap Zone: This zone showcases the genius of ancient people, featuring various types of "traps" for rats, fish, and wild animals, all with complex and fascinating mechanisms.

  • Ancient Toys and Collectibles Zone: A zone that brings back childhood memories, featuring wooden toys, clay dolls, and items that can no longer be found in the digital age.

What makes this museum different from others is the welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Walking through feels like visiting the home of an elder relative who is a master collector. The surroundings are lush with various trees, and the wooden buildings provide a warm feeling. Each object has a short, easy-to-understand description, allowing those without prior historical knowledge to enjoy the tour. Furthermore, located just across the street is the Burana Thai Buddha Image Foundry, the original profession of Sargent Major Doctor Thawee Buranakhet, where you can watch the authentic process of sculpting and casting large Buddha statues.

Coming here is not just about looking at old objects lined up; it is about experiencing the love and bond a man has for his own roots. It is a place that reminds us that before today's advanced technology, Thai ancestors used their brains and hands to create extraordinary things. It is truly an unmissable destination when visiting Phitsanulok.
