“Experience the traditional houseboat lifestyle along the Nan River, enjoy floating noodle shops and fresh river fish dishes, admire scenic views of bridges and temples reflected on the water, and stroll along the riverside skywalk connecting both banks of the river.”

The houseboats along the Nan River are one of the most iconic cultural symbols of Phitsanulok. Located along both sides of the river in the city center, these floating homes and restaurants create a distinctive riverside atmosphere that reflects the historic lifestyle of people who have lived closely connected to the water for generations.

Historically, the houseboat community in Phitsanulok dates back to the Ayutthaya period and flourished during the early Rattanakosin era. In the past, the Nan River served as a major transportation and trade route, making floating homes a practical living solution for many residents. This unique lifestyle eventually became part of the province’s famous motto: “Both banks of the Nan River are lined with houseboats.”

Although modern urban development and environmental management have reduced the number of houseboats, a portion of them has been preserved as a cultural heritage zone, allowing visitors to witness this traditional riverside way of life.

Today, the area features a mix of residential houseboats, floating restaurants, and floating structures belonging to nearby temples, especially around important landmarks such as Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat (Wat Yai) and Wat Ratchaburana. Many floating restaurants are well known for serving traditional floating-style noodles and fresh river fish dishes, allowing visitors to dine while gently swaying with the movement of the water.

The Nan River in this section is also the main venue for major local cultural events, including the Loy Krathong Festival and the Royal Trophy Long Boat Racing Festival, which are held here annually and attract large crowds of visitors.

In the evening, the riverside becomes particularly beautiful. Lights from houseboats and the Naresuan Bridge reflect across the river’s surface, creating a peaceful and picturesque atmosphere. Walking along the riverside promenade or enjoying dinner at a floating restaurant is one of the most memorable experiences when visiting the historic city of Song Kwae.
