“Admire the beautiful laterite prang with Khmer-influenced architecture, pay respect to the Buddha footprint replica built during King Narai’s reign, and visit Luang Pho Phet, the revered Buddha image of the local community.”

Wat Chulamani is one of the oldest historical temples in Phitsanulok. It is believed to have existed since before the Sukhothai period and once stood within the area of the ancient city known as Song Khwae, the former name of Phitsanulok. Due to its strategic location near the Nan River, the temple and surrounding area played an important role in the region’s historical and cultural development.

Historical Importance in the Ayutthaya Period

The temple gained great historical significance during the Ayutthaya period when King Borommatrailokanat relocated the royal residence to Phitsanulok for a period of time. In 1464 CE (B.E. 2007), the king temporarily abdicated and ordained as a monk at Wat Chulamani. He remained in the monkhood for 8 months and 15 days, accompanied by 2,348 royal officials and followers who also entered the monkhood. This remarkable event became an important chapter in the history of both Ayutthaya and Phitsanulok.

Remarkable Ancient Architecture

One of the most striking structures within the temple grounds is the Khmer-style laterite prang. Built from laterite blocks, the prang stands on a high base with a “yom mum mai yi sip” (twenty-cornered indentation) architectural style. Decorative stucco details, especially the elegant swan motifs, adorn the structure and reflect the craftsmanship of ancient artisans during the early Ayutthaya era.

Buddha Footprint Pavilion and Historical Inscription

Near the prang stands a mondop housing a replica of the Buddha’s footprint, constructed by royal command of King Narai the Great. A stone inscription in front of the pavilion records that in B.E. 2221 (1678 CE) the king ordered the sacred footprint to be traced with cloth and carved onto stone so that the public could pay homage and receive blessings.

Living Faith and Sacred Buddha Image

Inside the temple’s main hall is Luang Pho Phet, a graceful Thai-style Buddha image highly revered by local residents of Tha Thong and the people of Phitsanulok. Visiting Wat Chulamani offers not only a chance to appreciate valuable historical architecture and archaeological remains but also an opportunity to experience the peaceful spiritual atmosphere of this riverside temple.

How to Get There
  • By Car: From downtown Phitsanulok, take Borommatrailokanat Road heading south toward Bang Krathum District. Continue driving along the road beside the Nan River for about 5 kilometers, and you will see the entrance sign to Wat Chulamani on the right-hand side.

Travel Tips
  • Look closely at the stucco swan motifs around the base of the prang, which display the refined craftsmanship of ancient artisans.

  • As most of the historical structures are outdoors, bringing a hat or umbrella is recommended during daytime visits.

  • Visitors should dress respectfully as the site is an important religious and historical place.

  • The riverside area near the temple becomes cool and pleasant in the evening, making it ideal for a relaxing stroll.

  • Late afternoon light enhances the texture and details of the laterite prang, creating excellent photo opportunities.
